How do you like those apples?
Half of what I did the previous week.

This week there’s fewer spinning classes at the studio, Glossop as it’s half term. You may notice more running though. I recommend a bit of running, it’s nice to do something different than just bike all the time. I ran with a friend on Saturday who got into running last year. She was very patient and ran slowly with me. We ended up doing 5k in 45 minutes, which I think is quite good for a beginner (is it? I don’t know). I biked to the destination which invoved taking in my North Road mini hill challenge, so I was already quite warmed up at that point. It was really quite a pleasant way to start a saturday and we’re running again tomorrow, but a different route.

The second run was with Cherry Baker. We did mix a bit of speed walking in that too though. It was about 3k and around a reservoir. Definitely a nice place to live, despite what anyone might say. I do enjoy living in Glossop. In five minutes you can be out in the countryside. Thirty five minutes and you’re in Manchester. And if you love sitting in traffic, you can try to either get in or out of the place.

This week I dropped a pound, possibly more. The latter half of the week has involved no consumption of sugar at all and no carbs. It’s been difficult, but I’m quite pleased that I’ve been able to stick to it. I think it will pay off next week. I know that it’s not sustainable and not sensible, but I need to try and seriously drop weight before the cheshire cat. That will be a tough one. My first 100 and it takes in Mow Cop, going up!

I’m still considering the mountain bikes. Had a look at some Oranges, and I think I would like an Orange, but I need to try out the Diva (ladies version) first. It all depends on time and so on. Although I am tempted to just buy one and see how it goes, I need to listen to Trio and wait and try.

Next week will be a super busy time. Quite stressful I think, I hope I can fit exercising in. But the great news is it Wales time again next weekend, when hopefully I’ll be meeting Joby and this time we’ll make it to Anglesey.

  1. Em, I would whole heartedly recommend Orange bikes. They’re specifically built for UK conditions. I had a P7 back in the day. Fantastic bike. You won’t go far wrong with a Diva.

Oranges can be a little pricey because they sort of fall into the “boutique” bracket. I have a MTB from one of the “boutique” brands and it was a lot of money! However, these people tend to make very very nice bikes.

Always ride one to see how you get on – possibly more important on a MTB than a road bike as you need to move you weight around a lot more. If it’s an awkward fit then that’s going to be harder to do.

Budgetwise – spend at least £500 on a hardtail if you can, at least £1200 on a full suspension. For normal cross-country riding a decent spec hardtail is always going to be better than a poor spec full susser.

    Hope that helps.

Good luck with the continued exercise.

Oh, as for ladies fit… if you have long legs, short torso (like ladies often do) then a ladies specific fit will possibly be better. If you have more equal legs/torso or even short legs, long torso (like men generally do) then a regular bike might be better. Don’t think that just because you haven’t got mens bits you need a ladies bike!

I like the idea of buying British, not sure why. Maybe also as they are built not far from here. It’s jobs for people isn’t it.

I went to try some out last week with Trio and then had a look at some Orange for blokes in Snow and Rock. I have comparatively short legs by all accounts. Not much longer than Trio’s and she’s 5ft3! Therefore we are to assume that I am a bit blokey in build. However, a feller’s bike seems to be a bit too long. My arms must be a bit shorter. Maybe I’m like some form of body proportions freak. And mtb handlebars are way wider than I remember! Guess I must be used to the road bike now.

So I think I need a lasses bike. Or maybe a 15 inch frame perhaps. I’m endeavoring to try them first. I’m really working hard to resist the urge just to purchase one off of the internets.

There’s a place not far away that has the Orange diva. I might go and have a look at that soon. I can’t buy until I’ve been paid at the end of the month anyway. Exciting though. Then I’ll have to find time to do road and mtb riding.

Oh and by the way, I think I lost 3lbs last week. Alllllllright!
